Harvest 2015 Wrap Up Part 2 – Nitrogen Advisor

Last week we took a look back at the wet conditions during the 2015 growing season. This week, we focus on one farmer who utilized Climate FieldView Pro™ Nitrogen Advisor.
One farmer in Iowa was worried about how much nitrogen he would be applying this year. He wanted to be smart with his resources, but also wanted to make sure he had enough to get through the season. He farms in central Iowa where soils are typically high in organic matter. He applied 100lbs of nitrogen prior to planting, along with a 50lb sidedress.
“I don’t want to use any more nitrogen than I have to. This year I can’t wait to get on the field and start combining.”
While the farmer typically expects yields around 180-200 bu/ac, he noticed that his yield potential this year was higher than normal. Wondering if he had enough nitrogen to support the added yield potential, he consulted Climate FieldView Pro Nitrogen Advisor. After updating his inputs in the tool, Nitrogen Advisor was still showing he had adequate nitrogen. Soil tests confirmed that there was enough nitrogen in the field and another application was not needed. As we caught up with the farmer after harvest, he realized that yield potential and raised around 230 bu/ac of corn.
Check back next week for part 3 in our series where we highlight a couple more farmers in Iowa who experienced issues with disease management and how the issues can be detected with Field Health Advisor.
