Total Weather Insurance (TWI) is the only full-season insurance program that enables you to protect your potential profits by insuring against adverse weather events that can cause yield shortfalls, even when you fully utilize Federal crop insurance.

How it Works

Select Crop for Details:

growthstages_corn_v1

Total Weather Insurance covers growers against six key weather perils that can limit corn yields. From germination and emergence to pollination, drought and dent, TWI Corn covers growers against the weather events that make or break yields.

  • Early Drought protects against post-planting drought that can limit early crop growth and threaten crop viability.
  • Drought protects against depleted soil moisture that can cause wilting, pollination issues and decreased yields.
  • Daytime Heat Stress protects against hot days that can reduce crop growth and result in ineffective pollination.
  • Nighttime Heat Stress protects against warm nights that result in diminished kernel growth due to increased plant respiration.
  • Excess Moisture protects against excessive local precipitation, which can lead to standing water that starves the crop of oxygen and promotes disease.
  • Low Heat Units/Freeze protects against a cool growing season or early freeze events that can prevent corn from reaching full maturity.

Total Weather Insurance covers growers against five key weather perils that can limit soybean yield. From germination and emergence to canopy establishment, flowering, pod set and pod fill, TWI Soybean covers growers against the key weather events that make or break yields.

  • Early Drought protects against post-planting drought that can delay germination, limit early crop growth and threaten crop viability.
  • Drought protects against depleted soil moisture that can limit reproductive success and yields.
  • Daytime Heat Stress protects against hot days that can limit plant growth, pod count and seed size.
  • Excess Moisture protects against excessive local precipitation, which can lead to standing water that starves the crop of oxygen and promotes disease.
  • Early Fall Freeze protects against early fall freeze events that may damage plants before full yield potential is realized.

TWI Winter Wheat covers the weather risks that can limit winter wheat yields, including protection against fall drought that can limit germination and establishment, post-dormancy heat stress and drought that can limit test weights and yield, and excess moisture that can cause disease and yield shortfalls.

  • Fall Drought protects against lack of precipitation during the fall that can prevent successful germination and/or limit fall tillering.
  • Drought protects against low soil moisture conditions post-dormancy that can cause tiller loss, reduce kernel count or test weight or cause plant death.
  • Daytime Heat Stress protects against hot days that can shorten the grainfill period and reduce kernel numbers or kernel size.
  • Excess Moisture protects against excessive local precipitation, which can negatively impact yield potential by reducing root respiration, slowing down development and promoting disease.

Adaptive Coverage

TWI features a flexible coverage structure to ensure that crops in the field are protected from bad weather during the right times throughout the growing season:

  • Growth Stage Tracker℠ dynamically calculates coverage dates for key weather perils by tracking the weather-driven progression of the crop in-season to estimate when the crop is entering each growth stage. With Growth Stage Tracker, TWI coverage is adaptive to a broader range of extreme weather scenarios.
  • Soil Moisture Tracker℠ provides daily field-level assessments of yield-impacting excess moisture or drought conditions. For TWI 2013, an initial soil moisture value is set right at the beginning of the growing season. Soil Moisture Tracker then calculates daily changes to the plant-available soil moisture based on the amount of water entering the soil through precipitation and the amount of water leaving the soil through evapotranspiration.

Precision Weather Measurement

TWI utilizes 2.5 x 2.5 mile grids for precipitation and temperature measurement to accurately capture the weather conditions on a grower’s farm:

  • Precision Rainfall Grids℠ – TWI tracks precipitation nationwide using Precision Rainfall Grids powered by radar-based National Weather Service data. By using the 2.5 x 2.5 mile grid that includes the grower’s TWI coverage location, Precision Rainfall Grids provide a more accurate precipitation measurement for the grower’s location than is available with traditional land-based weather stations.
  • Precision Temperature Grids℠ – TWI tracks temperature values based on 2.5 x 2.5 mile Precision Temperature Grids. Each Precision Temperature Grid utilizes data from up to 3 nearby, on-the-ground weather stations – adjusted for grid-specific geographic characteristics such as elevation or proximity to bodies of water – to calculate daily temperature conditions. Precision Temperature Grids are designed to provide more precise temperature values for a grower’s location than is possible with point-based temperature reporting.
