Named Perils: All Crops

Coverage for Rain, Drought, Heat and Freeze

The Climate Corporation protects growers against four key weather perils that can negatively impact yield: Rain, Drought, Heat and Freeze.

Our flagship weather risk management solution is Total Weather Insurance (TWI).

TWI is full-season insurance that protects against the major weather perils you may face throughout the growing season. Coverage is optimized for a particular grower based on crop, location, soil type and local weather risks.

In addition to TWI, The Climate Corporation offers named peril coverage.

Named Peril Drought - Grassland

Designed to protect producers from financial losses they may incur as a result of drought on rangeland, pastureland or hayland. The coverage pays policyholders based on the severity of drought during the coverage period, as measured by plant available soil moisture levels.

  • • Recognizes weather loss based on daily deviations of field-level soil moisture values below 25%
  • • Coverage can range from 30 to 365 days in length
  • • Must purchase by the 10th of the current month to start coverage in the subsequent month. For example, in order to buy coverage that starts any time in July, policies must be purchased by June 10th.

Heat

Too much heat stress or inadequate summer heat units can threaten crop development and shrink yields by over 50%.

  • Low Heat Units protects growers against abnormally cool seasons where total heat unit accumulation falls below a threshold.
  • Heat Stress protects growers against a hot season where the maximum temperature exceeds a threshold on an abnormally high number of days.

Freeze

Both spring and fall freezes can devastate crops, necessitating replanting or causing significant yield loss.

  • Spring Freeze protects growers against a spring freeze event occurring any time after a date of their choosing.
  • Fall Freeze protects growers against an early fall freeze occurring that may keep a crop from reaching full maturity and full yield potential.

Frequent or heavy rains can cause significant production issues from planting through harvest.

  • • Storm Flood protects growers against the possibility of storms during the growing season that produce large amounts of rainfall in a short time period.
  • • Rainy Season protects growers against the possibility of large rainfall totals that may occur in periods of 30 days or longer.
  • • Rain on Planting protects growers against frequent or heavy rains that may keep them out of the fields during key planting periods.
  • • Rainy Days protects growers against the possibility of frequent rains during specific time periods.
  • • Rain on Hay protects growers against the possibility of untimely rains occurring while a cut hay crop is drying in the field.
